Intertek provides TenneT with expert assurance services for offshore wind grid
Intertek, a leading Total Quality Assurance provider to industries worldwide, has been appointed by transmission system operator TenneT to provide long-term client representation services in support of offshore wind grid connections in the North Sea.
The German government has established targets for offshore wind with a capacity of 6.5 gigawatts (GW) to be connected to the grid by 2020 and 20 GW by 2030. As the responsible transmission grid operator, TenneT is connecting offshore wind farms in the North Sea to the onshore electricity grid.
Safety, reliability and high grid availability are key. The company has already taken into operation twelve offshore grid connection systems in the German part of the North Sea. With their transmission capacity adding up to 7.132 GW, TenneT has exceeded the 2020 target set by the German government. By 2027 TenneT plans to have completed another four offshore projects with a capacity of 3.6 GW.
Intertek has been appointed for the full contract scope that includes specialist client representation for maritime surveys, technical inspection and maintenance work on offshore platform structures, and for subsea cable installation and repair activities. The surveys include hydrographic work, subsea cable depth measurements, erosion studies, and geotechnical exploration drilling.
Intertek’s extensive global offshore project experience spans numerous industries and includes the planning and permitting, engineering support, and construction oversight of offshore power transmission, telecommunication cable, and offshore renewables projects. Our many services include site selection and characterization, feasibility studies, survey and installation oversight, Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) and scoping studies, metocean assessments, and risk management for a variety of offshore developments.
