The Guinea-Bissau-flagged bulk carrier Golden Leo has sunk off the coast of Odesa after being severely damaged in a Russian attack on July 19, according to the Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority.
The vessel was sailing from the port of Chornomorsk with a cargo of corn when it came under attack while transiting a Ukrainian-controlled shipping corridor toward Romania.
Ukrainian authorities said the strike killed nine crew members, while eight others were rescued and evacuated. The vessel remained afloat for several days before eventually sinking near the port.
The Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority condemned the attack, saying it violated international maritime law and endangered civilian shipping in the Black Sea.
Russia has not publicly commented on the incident. In recent weeks, Russian forces have intensified attacks on Ukraine’s southern port infrastructure, targeting facilities that handle grain exports and other strategic cargoes.
