Ukraine’s Security Service (SSU) said it carried out a long-range drone operation targeting a Russian naval vessel, two sanctioned cargo ships and an offshore oil platform in the Caspian Sea, describing the strikes as retaliation for Russian attacks on Ukrainian ports.
According to the SSU, the operation took place overnight on July 25. The reported targets included a Russian Navy Project 1241.8 (Tarantul IV-class) missile corvette, two cargo vessels allegedly used to transport military supplies between Russia and Iran, and a production platform at the Filanovsky oil field.
The agency did not identify the warship by name. Open-source reports suggest the Caspian Flotilla operates the Project 1241.8 corvette Stupinets, although it remains unclear whether it or its sister ship, Strelok, was among the vessels hit.
The SSU said the strikes were a response to Russia’s continued missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian ports in the south of the country, which Kyiv says are aimed at disrupting maritime trade.
“The enemy’s actions will receive a legitimate response as part of Ukraine’s inherent right to self-defence,” the SSU said, adding that operations against Russian military assets would continue.
