Ukraine reports strike on sanctioned shadow fleet tanker in Black Sea

Published:

Ukrainian forces struck the tanker FINA A, a vessel linked to Russia’s shadow fleet, during operations on June 16 and overnight into June 17, according to the General Staff of Ukraine.

The military said the extent of the damage is still being assessed.

According to ship-tracking data, the tanker was operating in the Black Sea between the Russian ports of Anapa and Novorossiysk at the time of the strike.

FINA A is subject to sanctions imposed by the European Union, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Canada and Ukraine. Authorities have accused the vessel of transporting Russian oil and petroleum products in support of efforts to bypass international sanctions.

The 244.6-meter tanker has previously carried Russian crude from the Sheskharis terminal in Novorossiysk. In August 2025, it reportedly delivered nearly 100,000 tonnes of oil shipped by sanctioned Russian energy company Rosneft to Senegal.

The European Union sanctioned the vessel in May 2025, while Ukraine added FINA A to its sanctions list later that year and subsequently sanctioned the vessel’s captain in February 2026.
