In 1997-1998, four women scientists spent the winter as part of the second Antarctic expedition, but later this right was granted exclusively to men. The Antarctic Akademik Vernadsky station celebrates an important anniversary - 25 years since the day when the owner country changed. On February 6, 1996, the Union Jack was lowered at this Antarctic station and the Ukrainian flag was raised for the first time.

Since the collapse in oil price in 2014, the whole industry has been undergoing a painful readjustment to the new market environment. 

Rock dumping vessels (Fall Pipe Vessel) are a category of watercraft that exist for the purpose of dumping rocks on the seabed. They are able to transport and dump rocks of variable sizes. The vessels range from large bulk-carrier style vessels, able to carry out precision operations using fallpipes, to smaller deck-loading vessels mainly used for erosion remediation.

Dredging is a displacement of soil, carried out under water. It serves several different purposes. One of the applications meets the need to maintain minimum depths in canals and harbours by removing mud, sludge, gravel and rocks.
