Balearia’s third LNG dual-fuel fast ferry, Mercedes Pinto, has started its gas trials on Wendesday.
The Spanish ferry operator said in a statement that it expects to take delivery of the vessel from Armon Gijon in May.
The sea trials will continue over the coming days and include tests of maneuverability, speed, stability, and engine performance, as well as the functioning of the power and navigation systems.
These trials, which will be conducted using both natural gas and diesel, also serve to verify the correct functioning of the auxiliary, safety, and propulsion systems prior to the vessel’s entry into service, Balearia said.
Armon Gijon floated out the new ferry in September last year.
Balearia has invested 128 million euros ($150 million) in the construction of the LNG-powered ferry.
Capable of transporting 1,200 passengers and 400 vehicles, the 123-meter-long ferry is a twin vessel of Eleanor Roosevelt and Margarita Salas, also built by Armon Gijon.
In 2024, Balearia took delivery of the high-speed aluminum structure catamaran Ro-Pax ferry, Margarita Salas, from the yard.
The vessel operates with four Wartsila 31DF dual-fuel engines, four WXJ hydraulic waterjets, and features two Wartsila LNGPac fuel storage and supply systems.
Its sister ship, Eleanor Roosevelt, was delivered earlier with the same Wartsila scope.
Balaria owns 11 LNG-powered ferries, including converted vessels.
