Tankers torpedoed in the Middle East

0

Two tankers have been targeted this morning while transiting waters near to Fujairah. Frontline’s fully laden LR 2 Front Altair was hit by surface attacks, and an enormous fire ensued forcing the crew to abandon ship. The crew were safely picked up by nearby general cargoship, Hyundai Dubai

Bernhard Schulte’s chemical tanker Kokuka Courageous was also hit by torpedoes this morning, one month and one day from the moment four other tankers were damaged by limpet mines off Fujairah (pictured). The ship disappeared from several ship tracking sites for a period of time today but is now back on the MarineTraffic site, with a ‘Stopped’ status.

“The hull has been breached above the water line on the starboard side,” Bernhard Schulte said in a statement on its website. “All crew are reported safe and only one minor injury reported.”

The two targeted ships are lying approximately 50 km apart in Iranian waters east of Fujairah.

The UK and its partners are currently investigating,” UK Maritime Trade Operations said on its website this morning, warning all vessels in the region to exercise extreme caution. The attacks have also been confirmed today by the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet.

Commenting on today’s attacks, security consultant Lars Bergqvist told Splash: “Although this incident seems to be outside the [High Risk Area], but inside the [Voluntary Reporting Area], it always advisable to follow BMP5 in these waters.” BMP5 is a counter-piracy best practice management guide developed by leading shipping associations. Bergqvist also urged owners to review guidelines for transit of Bab Al Mandab.

Prelude FLNG Ships First LNG Cargo

0

The first shipment of liquefied natural gas (LNG) has sailed from Shell’s Prelude floating LNG (FLNG) facility offshore Australia, Shell announced Tuesday alongside its joint venture partners INPEX, KOGAS and OPIC.

This shipment from the world’s largest floating producer of LNG, located 475 kilometers northeast of Broome in Western Australia, will be delivered by the LNG carrier Valencia Knutsen to customers in Asia, more than eight years after financial investment decision (FID) and nearly two years after the facility arrived in Australia.

"How fast Prelude delivers its second and third cargo, and ramps up to plateau output will be a key indicator of success," said Wood Mackenzie senior analyst Daniel Toleman. "Shell will be keen to ramp up to full production quickly to counteract any reserves impact from the already producing and connected Ichthys field."

When at plateau production, Prelude FLNG will be able to fill one shipborne cargo every week.

Maarten Wetselaar, Integrated Gas and New Energies Director, said, “Today’s first shipment of LNG departed from Prelude FLNG, safely. Everyone involved should be very proud of the work taken to reach this important milestone."

“Prelude forms an integral part of our global portfolio and plays an important role in meeting the growing demand for more and cleaner energy for our customers around the world.”

Zoe Yujnovich, Chairman Shell Australia, said, “Prelude FLNG combines human endeavor and ingenuity from across the globe and here in Australia. We are proud to work with our local communities, suppliers and partners to ensure its safe, reliable operations into the future.”

Toleman said, "The Prelude facility will be backfilled by Crux, which entered FEED this year. We expect an FID late next year with first production in 2025. In addition, later this year Shell will spud the Bratwurst exploration well. If a significant gas resource is discovered it is likely these volumes will be developed via the Prelude facility.  "

With Prelude onstream, Australia is on track to export more than 80 mmtpa of LNG, which surpasses Qatar as the largest LNG producer in the world.

The completion of Prelude marks the end of the Australian greenfield LNG boom. The next investment cycle is already in sight, with backfill projects – Scarborough, Barossa, Browse, Arrow and Crux – vying for FID.

Carbon Trust targets CTV emissions

0

The Carbon Trust’s Offshore Wind Accelerator programme has launched a competition that aims to accelerate the development of technologies with the potential to reduce emissions and fuel consumption of crew transfer vessels.

Up to £100,000 will be awarded to the winning technologies, out of a total of £300,000, to support development or demonstration.

The Carbon Trust said that designs submitted to the competition will be assessed for overall cost, operations and safety advantages.

It added that vessel designs, power and propulsion technologies as well as energy-providing systems will be considered within the scope of the competition.

The competition is being run in parallel with a commissioned study that will evaluate potential technologies to reduce emissions and fuel consumption.

The study will also look at the cost/benefit of existing and future powering and storage technologies and determine the infrastructure needed for integrating new technology into offshore wind operations.

Carbon Trust manager of offshore wind access systems Dan Kyle Spearman said: “The Low Emissions Vessels Competition demonstrates the commitment of the OWA developers to help further decarbonise offshore wind vessels, going beyond the regulatory requirements for vessel emissions."

The available funding will help kick-start the wider industry into looking into new ideas and using their ingenuity to overcome these challenges.

“The offshore wind industry also has a great opportunity to be a testbed and demonstration platform for new low-carbon technologies.”

Oshima Shipbuilding and DNV GL sign strategic cooperation

0

Oshima Shipbuilding and classification society DNV GL have signed a long-term strategic cooperation to conduct research and development together on new bulk carrier designs. The first design to result from the cooperation, the “Oshima Ultramax 2030” leading to a 50% reduction in EEDI, was launched at the Nor-Shipping trade fair in Oslo, the company said in its release.

The partners aim to continue the strategic cooperation through to 2030, developing and updating a road map towards the IMO zero emissions scenario, which will be gradually implemented through annual joint industry projects (JIPs), where other partners will be invited to join.

The first delivery resulting from this cooperation was launched at the Nor-Shipping trade fair in Oslo: the “Oshima Ultramax 2030”, a new, innovative design which has been developed in cooperation with leading engine manufacturer Wärtsilä. With an EEDI close to 50% lower than comparable vessels, this Ultramax design is one of the most efficient bulk carrier designs to date. It maximizes operational performance while minimizing emissions by utilizing LNG as fuel, an optimized hull shape and a sail to generate extra propulsion. In addition, the design offers ultra-low emissions in port, by using solar panels and a battery to cover the hotel load during waiting times and port operations.

Russia joins pilot TradeLens blockchain project

0

The Russian Ministry of Transport signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with A.P. Moller – Maersk, launching TradeLens in Russia. The blockchain platform is expected to significantly facilitate international trade, not least by the inclusion of the Port of St. Petersburg, Russia’s main container gateway, as part of the pilot launch.

The MoU was signed between Maersk CEO Søren Skou and Mr. Yuriy Tsvetkov, Deputy Transport Minister and Head of Federal Maritime and River transport Agency.

The Russian market will be able to introduce digital documentation flow, in comparison to today's paper-based transportation processes.

Mr. Yuriy Tsvetkov at the signing ceremony noted.."The main result of the implementation of TradeLens, according to our expectations, should be an increase in the transparency of the Contracting procedure by distributing information about supply and demand, conditions and operations between many participants of the transport and logistics processes."

Maersk's statement highlights that the MoU with Russia, enables TradeLens blockchain project to have a strong presence in Russia.

The platform aims to significantly facilitate the interaction between shippers and various regulatory and administrative bodies in the country, ultimately increasing the speed of cargo clearance and movement of goods across borders. TradeLens enables participants to connect, share information and collaborate across the container logistics supply chain ecosystem. Members gain a comprehensive view of their data and can digitally collaborate as cargo moves around the world, helping create a transparent, secured, immutable record of transactions.

The participants don't have the ability to modify, delete or append any record without consensus of the rest in the project; Therefore, the transparency level provides liability in reducing fraud and errors.

In the past, Maersk and IBM experienced problems concerning their blockchain project, TradeLens. Yet, both companies seem to have overcome their difficulties by having Modern Terminals joining and supporting the project and ports such as Port of Valencia, Port of Montreal, Saudi Arabia, Port Authority of Bay of Algeciras, ZIM, CMA CGM and MSC.
