Mainstay Marine surfs Welsh wave

Published:

Welsh workboat builder Mainstay Marine Solutions has won a contract to build the main structure of a megawatt-scale wave device to be deployed off the Pembrokeshire coast.

The contract to make and assemble the mWave hardware was awarded by Australian developer Bombora Wave Power.

Pembroke Dock outfit Mainstay will kick off fabrication of the all-steel structure imminently with delivery of the fully-assembled device slated for spring 2020.

The commercial-scale 1.5MW mWave device measures 75 metres long, 17.5 metres wide and five metres high.

The machine will be installed at the Marine Energy Testing Area off the coast of Pembrokeshire for a test period of between six and 12 months starting in summer 2020.

“Mainstay has invested heavily to establish ourselves as the go-to company for marine energy fabrication projects, building such an innovative device of this magnitude is a great endorsement of our marine engineering capabilities and prospects for the future,” said director Stewart Graves.
