Wello welcomed in India

0

Finnish developer of wave energy systems Wello has signed a letter of intent for two projects that total 30MW, off India’s coast.

The letter of intent is with Ixin Group, a provider of engineering services in fields including energy and petrochemicals.

In collaboration with the Indian government, Ixin, which is part of Ixar Group, is interested in acquiring Wello's Penguin Core package for the construction of a 20MW and a 10MW wave energy park.

The installations, which could be built by 2023, will be deployed on India’s west coast, near Mumbai, and east coast.

The authorities have already “welcomed the concept”, according to Wello, and the company said initial discussions were “encouraging”.

The developer says it is now in the process of applying for the government's acceptance of the technology.

Wello is currently looking to raise €1-2.5 million in exchange for equity between 4.34% and 10.18%.

Current projects include a three-unit array of 1MW Penguin machines at the European Marine Energy Centre off Orkney.

The first device sank in late March.

Future projects Wello is working on include the 10MW Nusa Lembongan scheme in Indonesia, which is in the design phase.

Dubai has slid out of the top ten container ports rankings, its position usurped by yet another fast rising Chinese city.

Dubai, home to Jebel Ali, the flagship of the DP World empire, saw throughput decline 2.7% last year to 14.95m, slipping down Alphaliner’s port rankings to 11th spot. In its place in the top ten was the northeastern Chinese city of Tianjin, which saw throughput climb 6.2% to hit 16.01m teu.

Shanghai remains top on 42.01m teu, Singapore second with 36.6m teu, while Ningbo leapt above Shenzhen into third with 26.35m teu. Including Hong Kong, Chinese cities make seven of the top 10 container ports in the world.

Hong Kong was the biggest loser last year, continuing its slide down the rankings with 19.6m teu handled, down 5.7% year-on-year, putting in seventh place.

Minesto awards contract for DG100 foundation connection system

0

Minesto has completed the procurement of the foundation connection system for the DG100 model of the company’s subsea kite technology called Deep Green. A contract for design and development of the system has been awarded to Inyanga-Tech, with Quoceant as main sub-supplier.

The foundation connection system connects the DG100 kite and its tether* with the seabed foundation and the seabed umbilical cable. Forming a key part of Minesto’s upgraded launch and recovery system, the system proposed will be adopted for all next-generation power plants of Minesto’s marine energy technology.

The new design will not only enable the DG100 kites to freely operate in their unique figure-of-eight trajectory, but also reduce the time and complexity for launch and recovery operations, hence increasing overall system availability.

Sinisa Joveljic, Project Manager for the development of Minesto’s DG100 Project said: “We are pleased to work with Inyanga-Tech to develop the DG100 foundation connection system. In firm competition with other tenderers, one of the significant factors in selecting the proposed Inyanga team was their experience of integrating electrical wet mates and mechanical connectors in a marine environment.”

Watch: Wreck Removal of the SSV Jupiter 1

0

Mammoet Salvage has released a video of what it says was one of the most daring salvage operations ever undertaken in the Gulf of Mexico, “where an environmental disaster of Deepwater Horizon proportions was prevented by pulling off a genius plan by a great group of people.”

The video shows the company's wreck removal project of the Jupiter 1 floatel that partially sank off Mexico in April 2011. 638 personnel were evacuated after a valve problem caused the platform to take on water.

Water depth in the area was 38 meters (125 feet), and the 50-meter (164-foot) wide platform was left with 13 meters (43 feet)above water levels – only seven meters from active pipelines.

The floatel, owned by Cotemar and managed by PEP, had 2,075 barrels of diesel stored in the pontoons and 82 barrels of jet fuel stored in containers on the deck.

Rhode Island funds ‘Ready 4 Offshore Wind’ project

0

The project called 'Ready 4 Offshore Wind', which is led by the US Business Network for Offshore wind, was selected to receive a part of a USD 1.6 million funding from the Rhode Island government.

Specifically, the offshore project is placed amongst 12 partnerships that were announced by the Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training (DLT) and Governor Gina M. Raimondo to receive implementation grants as part of expanding the Real Jobs Rhode Island program.

According to DLT, the offshore project will create many job opportunities for local businesses, as the latter will be able to enter the offshore wind industry through training and business services.

In the meantime, the project is expected to spread knowledge in businesses concerning the supply chain and their role in project development through the Network’s proprietary Foundation to Blade training.

Moreover, DLT reported that the 12 collaborations will consist of more than 160 employer partners and will connect hundreds of people, providing them with employment and training opportunities in the energy, bioscience, finance and insurance, food processing and manufacturing, healthcare and information technology industries.

As Governor Raimondo commented…."Real Jobs Rhode Island has served almost 6,000 Rhode Islanders, helping them get the skills they need to compete in a rapidly-changing economy. Our employer-centered model allows Rhode Island employers to directly train future employees for good-paying jobs and is a critical element of our success."

The Real Jobs Rhode Island was launched in 2015 and is an economic development grant program.

Keppel launches one of Singapore’s first autonomous tugs

0

Keppel Singmarine, Keppel Offshore & Marine's subsidiary, announced the development of an autonomous tug that will operate by Keppel Smit Towage. It is expected to be one of Singapore's first autonomous vessels when the project is completed in 4Q 2020.

For the development of the autonomous tug, Keppel O&M secured a grant of up to SGD 2 million, USD 1.47 million, from the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) under its Maritime Innovation and Technology Fund.

This is after Keppel O&M, MPA and the Technology Centre for Offshore and Marine, Singapore (TCOMS) signed a Memorandum of Understanding in April 2018, in favour of a collaboration to develop autonomous vessels for a variety of applications, undertaking harbour operations such as channelling, berthing, mooring and towing operations.

The project of the automated tug consists of a 65 MT modified tug with retrofitting advanced systems such as position manoeuvring, digital pilot vision, as well as collision detection and avoidance. Also, an onshore command centre will be constructed, that will be responsible for controlling the tug.

Quah Ley Hoon, Chief Executive of MPA commented.."Autonomous vessels are the next exciting phase of development in the maritime industry and in Maritime Singapore. Here, we are constantly looking out for the next new technology to pilot and testbed in an effort to develop Maritime Singapore to be more efficient, productive and technologically advanced."

Concluding, Keppel O&M, through Keppel Marine and Deepwater Technology, will collaborate with MPA and TCOMS to develop technologies and be the system integrator for the autonomous solutions.
