The “Jilin No. 2,” the world’s first 100kW bamboo-based offshore floating photovoltaic platform, was completed.
Jointly developed by CIMC Ocean Engineering Institute, China Forestry Group Corporation, and Beijing Forestry University, the platform will be deployed at CIMC’s offshore solar demonstration base in Yantai, Shandong, supplying green power for a hydrogen-ammonia-methanol demonstration project.
The platform features third-generation “bamboo-wound” tubes and “Sea Bamboo Pipe” — a prestressed fiber-reinforced wood-bamboo composite with superior strength, light weight, and corrosion resistance.
Compared to conventional steel or HDPE structures, the bamboo-based design significantly reduces marine environmental impact. Building on the 10kW “Jilin No. 1” prototype from 2023, the milestone advances bamboo materials from lab to industrial scale.
The partners will next pursue a megawatt-level pilot to drive standardization and global adoption of green marine materials.
