Sweden trials light-guided trawling to reduce seabed impact in shrimp fishing

Sweden is testing a new fishing technology that uses underwater lights to guide shrimp into trawl nets without dragging gear along the seabed, as the country seeks more sustainable fishing methods.

The “Light Trawling” project, funded by the European Union, is led by Sotenäs Municipality in partnership with the fishing association FF Norden and Chalmers Industriteknik. The initiative was inspired by technology previously developed in Iceland and is being adapted for Swedish fishing conditions.

Unlike conventional shrimp trawling, which relies on gear in contact with the seabed, the new system is designed to keep the net suspended above the bottom. Underwater lights attract shrimp into the trawl, potentially reducing damage to sensitive marine habitats while also decreasing fuel consumption and wear on fishing equipment due to lower drag.

The project comes as Sweden debates stricter restrictions on bottom trawling in marine protected areas and growing concerns over the condition of marine ecosystems. Developers hope the technology can help balance environmental protection with the long-term viability of the country’s fishing industry.

Researchers and fishers are currently evaluating how the system performs under different sea conditions, including varying currents, water visibility and seabed characteristics. The trials will also determine the optimal positioning of the gear to maintain commercially viable shrimp catches.

If the technology proves effective, it could provide the fishing industry with a practical low-impact alternative to traditional bottom trawling, helping reduce pressure on marine ecosystems while improving operational efficiency for fishing vessels.
