ONE Drags Down NYK Line Earnings

0

Container line joint venture Ocean Network Express (ONE) dragged down NYK Line in the first half of 2018 ended September 30 with with Japanese shipping group in the red.

NYK Line reported a loss of JPY 9.7 billion for the six months ended September 30, compared with a JPY6.2 billion profit a year earlier. The consolidated revenues amounted to JPY 915.6 billion, down from JPY 1,064.2 billion in the same period of the previous fiscal year.

The new shipping line ONE, which was established with the aim of integrating the container shipping business with those of Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. started offering service from April 1, 2018.

However, immediately after the start of the business, a disruption to the service occurred, causing a drop in loading volumes and slot utilization.

"The impact of this resulted in a loss being recorded," said the Japanese shipping major.

In addition, NYK Line incurred significant one-time costs following the termination of the container shipping business mainly in the first quarter. In the Air Cargo Transportation segment, the company’s consolidated subsidiary Nippon Cargo Airlines Co., Ltd. grounded all 11 of its aircraft from the middle of June in order to confirm the soundness of the aircraft.

Also, an extraordinary loss was recorded due to an impairment loss on some of the aircraft and spare engines owned by the company. On the other hand, in accordance with the policy of reducing the strategic shareholdings, some of the securities held by the company were sold, and the gain on sales of investment securities was recorded as an extraordinary income.

UK mission offers US offshore advice

0

A UK delegation, including the Team Humber Marine Alliance, is visiting the US east coast to meet with politicians, academics and business leaders to discuss offshore wind development.

The visit – from 29 October to 2 November – is organised by the Foreign & Commonwealth Office and hosted by British Embassy staff with help from the Cross-Government Prosperity Fund.

It is meeting with interested parties in Boston, New Bedford, Providence, New York and New Jersey. Topics include the potential harm to incumbent ocean users and communities, competition between different states and a lack of supply chain expertise.

Team Humber Marine Alliance chief executive Mark O’Reilly (pictured, centre left) said: “There is intense interest in how the Humber and other offshore wind hubs in the UK have overcome these challenges.“

The US only has only one 30MW array in operation despite areas with immense opportunities, so the sector is in its infancy.

They are particularly interested in the critical role we have all played in addressing community impact while delivering value to the communities we live in.

The invitation illustrates how far the Humber and other parts of the UK have come and also presents commercial opportunities as it is accepted that, while the US will develop its own supply chain, it will have to draw on European expertise in order to get momentum in the sector and meet its targets.”

Other delegates from the UK include Andrew Oliver of Andrew Jackson Solicitors, Louise Smith of Project Aura at the University of Hull, Mandy Masters of Rix Shipping and Tony Appleton (pictured, left) from Burns & McDonnell.

The delegation also met with Congressman Joe Kennedy (pictured, centre right) and New Bedford mayor Jon Mitchell (pictured, right).

CMA CGM Completes Acquisition of Containerships

0

CMA CGM has completed its acquisition of Containerships after the European Commission authorized the transaction on October 22. The acquisition is part of CMA CGM's strategy aimed at densifying its regional network which began in 2002 with the acquisition of MacAndrews.

Containerships, which specializes in the intra-European market, will complement CMA CGM’s service offering, the company says. Founded in 1966, Containerships is a Finnish company specialized in Intra-European containerized trade with 690 employees. It offers logistics solutions that include sea, road, rail and barge.

Upon closing the agreement, Container Finance’s entire container logistics operations including mainly Containerships plc as well as Multi-link Terminals Ltd and CD Holding Oy will integrate CMA CGM’s intra-regional market offering in Europe.

With the acquisition of Containerships, CMA CGM says it strengthens its position as a major player in intra-European transport, in particular through the combination of the geographical areas covered by Containerships and MacAndrews. MacAndrews, recently merged with OPDR, covers Great Britain, Poland, Sweden, Ireland, the Netherlands, Spain (including the Canary Islands), Portugal and Morocco, Containerships is present in the Baltic markets, Russia, Northern Europe, North Africa and Turkey.

In 2017, 2.2 million TEUs were transported on CMA CGM Group's and Containerships’ intra-European lines. As a result of the acquisition, CMA CGM Group’s intra-European activities will be run by 2,700 employees located in 130 offices.

CMA CGM is already present regionally through its subsidiaries: CNC Line, one of the leaders in the Intra-Asia market; Mercosul, a leader in the domestic container transport market in Brazil and Sofrana, a major player in regional trade in the Pacific Islands.

With Containerships, CMA CGM is also pursuing its strategy towards the protection of the environment with the upcoming entry into Containerships’ fleet of four 1,400 TEU vessels powered by LNG. These vessels will be followed, from 2020 onwards, by the entry into service of the nine 22,000 TEU and two 1,400 TEU container ships ordered by the CMA CGM Group. In addition, Containerships has a fleet of LNG-powered trucks, enabling the CMA CGM Group to offer LNG throughout the transport cycle.

Containerships’ third and fourth LNG-powered vessels were christened earlier this month at the Wenchong Shipyard, China. The vessels were named M/S Containerships Finn and M/S Containerships Balt. The first two LNG-powered vessels are expected to be delivered during 2018 and the last two during January – March 2019.

The world’s largest LNG bunker supply vessel, M.V. Kairos, has been delivered to Babcock Schulte Energy, a 50:50 joint venture between Babcock and Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement.

The 7,500 cubic meter vessel features Wärtsilä four-stroke dual-fuel engines and was built by Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in South Korea. She will be deployed to the Baltic region servicing a number of clients including the Linde/AGA terminal in Nynäshamn and the Klaip?da LNG fueling station in Lithuania. Capable of performing both ship-to-ship bunkering and transhipment operations, she will be used for the LNG fueling of ships including ferries, containers, cruise vessels as well as shore-based gas consumers.

She will have a fuel transfer rate ranging from 60 m³/hour up to 1,250 m³/hour. In addition to its size, the vessel is also notable for its ballast-free design. Equipped with Babcock’s Fuel Gas Supply Vessel Zero technology – a scalable cargo handling and fueling solution – Kairos will eliminate the release of boil-off and flash gas to the atmosphere during normal operations.

The number of LNG bunkering vessels has grown from one at the beginning of 2017 to six in early 2018, with these numbers expected at least to double by 2020, multi-sector industry coalition SEALNG said. "Furthermore, it is forecast that in the next five years 30 LNG bunker vessels could be operating worldwide."

Boreas under public scrutiny

0

Swedish developer Vattenfall is seeking feedback from local communities on preliminary environmental information for the 1800MW Norfolk Boreas offshore wind farm off the east coast of England.

The assessment by independent specialists, combined with local feedback received before and during the community consultation, will allow a final proposal and any plans for mitigation to be submitted into planning in summer 2019.

Vattenfall is proposing to deploy a minimum of 90 turbines potentially up to 350 metres high above sea level with a potential capacity of up to 20MW. The Norfolk Boreas development area is 73km off the Norfolk coast.

It is proposed that the power will come ashore at Happisburgh and be exported to the National Grid substation near Necton via a 60km underground transmission cable, alongside its sister project, Norfolk Vanguard.

Local communities and residents can view the preliminary environmental information at various locations around the Norfolk and at seven public information days. They can also provide feedback to Vattenfall by completing a paper questionnaire or online.

The public information days start on 14 November at Happisburgh with the final information day to be held in Reepham on 24 November.

Vattenfall project manager for Norfolk Boreas Graham Davey said: “The feedback we have received over the past two years about Norfolk Boreas and Norfolk Vanguard has given us a good idea of local issues and opportunities.

That feedback has helped us minimise impact and identify benefits which will maximise local value. The environmental information we are consulting on builds on that picture.

But with this community consultation we want to take this opportunity to further refine the Norfolk Boreas proposal before submitting to decision makers next summer.

The information gathered during the statutory consultation will help Vattenfall complete the project’s final design and any necessary mitigation ahead of a formal application in summer 2019 for a development consent order from the Secretary of State for Energy in 2020.

Nova supplies tidal ‘baseload’

0

Scottish energy company Nova Innovation has successfully linked its tidal array off Shetland to an onshore Tesla battery storage system.

The Edinburgh developer said the “baseload tidal power station”, in operation since the start of the month, is a world first and represents the sector's “holy grail”.

Nova chief executive Simon Forrest said: “By storing the clean energy generated by the natural ebb and flow of the tide, we can control the supply of electricity to the grid to match demand."

This creates a consistent source of completely predictable power from a clean, sustainable resource.

He added: “Nova’s expertise in smart grid control, renewable generation and energy storage has delivered this game-changing innovation. We now look forward to expanding our services to other markets and renewable projects.

Funding for the project came from the Scottish government’s Low Carbon Infrastructure Transition Programme, in turn supported by the EU European Regional Development Fund.
