Mersey acquires Nova Scotia-based Comeau’s Sea Foods

Published:

Mersey Seafoods, one of Atlantic Canada’s largest privately owned seafood companies, will acquire Nova Scotia-based Comeau’s Sea Foods.

Comeau’s, a nearly 80-year-old supplier of whitefish, shellfish and salmon products, announced the acquisition Wednesday. The deal will have “no immediate changes to the day-to-day operations” and the Comeau name will remain as part of the business, according to the company.

“Comeau’s has always been guided by a strong sense of responsibility to its employees, customers, and community,” said Comeau’s President and CEO Noel Despres. “This was a thoughtful decision made with the company’s long-term future in mind. Mersey Seafoods is a Nova Scotia company that understands our industry, shares our values, and is committed to maintaining a strong local presence.”

Mersey President Mike Murphy said in the announcement that his company has “tremendous respect for what has been built at Comeau’s over generations.”

“This agreement brings together two Nova Scotia seafood companies with a long-standing relationship and shared values,” he said. “We are committed to supporting strong operations from Saulnierville and to carrying forward the Comeau name and legacy.”

The announcement comes a couple weeks after Mersey-backed Scotia Harvest acquired shellfish company Innovative Fishery Products (IFP).
